The Wisdom Tooth Extraction Process

There are two different types of wisdom tooth extractions – simple and surgical. Whether these teeth have erupted will ultimately determine which type of procedure you receive.

A simple procedure is generally performed when the wisdom teeth have partially erupted and are visible above the gumline. Using dental forceps and what is known as a dental elevator, we will lift the tooth from its socket and move it back and forth until it detaches from the ligaments underneath.

A surgical procedure is more invasive, as it requires that we make an incision in the gums. This is typically recommended when wisdom teeth are impacted beneath the gumline. After opening the gum tissue, we will dissect the tooth into sections for easier removal. This prevents additional damage to the underlying bone.
