What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a type of restoration that covers the entire tooth. It can be used in many different situations, such as:
- To repair a tooth that was badly fractured in an accident.
- To hold together a weakened tooth.
- To top a dental implant in order to act as a replacement tooth.
- To improve the appearance of a misshapen or discolored tooth.
The dental crowns at our office are made out of highly durable materials that can easily withstand the daily pressures of biting and chewing. You don’t have to do anything special to take care of a dental crown; you can simply brush and floss your teeth like you always have.
The Dental Crown Process

You may be familiar with the traditional process of getting a dental crown, which normally takes at least two appointments. During the first visit, a small amount of enamel is taken off the tooth before the necessary impressions are made. A temporary crown is placed to keep the tooth safe; in the meantime, the impressions are sent to a dental lab. There, trained technicians create a personalized crown, which is sent back to the dental office. The completed restoration is attached to the patient’s tooth during the second visit.
Here at our office, though, you can get a new crown in just one appointment thanks to the state-of-the-art E4D system. After preparing your tooth, we can scan it and virtually design a crown that’s precisely the right shape and size. Then the crown will be created by our in-office milling machine. Once it’s ready, we can simply place it on your tooth, thereby completing the process of restoring your smile!
The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Dental crowns remain a popular restorative dentistry option thanks to the many benefits they have to offer:
- They can lower your chances of needing more invasive dental treatments later by keeping the tooth safe from additional harm.
- They can potentially be made out of materials that blend in with your natural enamel, giving them a very lifelike appearance.
- They allow damaged or weakened teeth to continue to function normally, meaning you can still chew your food comfortably.
- They can last for 15 years (or even longer in some cases) as long as they receive good maintenance.
