While getting a normal dental crown can take weeks, some dentists are able to offer same-day crowns that are created in-office. This approach obviously has its benefits, but there are also some potential drawbacks. So, are same-day crowns a worthwhile investment for your smile? Your dentist is here to help you find the answer to that question by offering a closer look at the pros and cons of the treatment.

What are the Pros of Same-Day Crowns?

Choosing to get a same-day crown means that you will be able to enjoy the following benefits:

  • Fewer Appointments: At least two appointments are typically required to place a normal dental crown because the restoration has to be made at a separate laboratory. In contrast, same-day crowns are made in-office and can be completed in a single day, meaning only one appointment is typically required.
  • No Temporary Crown Needed: A bit of enamel needs to be removed to prepare a tooth for a dental crown. Consequently, if you get a traditional crown, you’ll have to wear a temporary restoration until the permanent version is ready. But with same-day crowns, this is unnecessary because it will only take one visit to prepare the tooth and place the crown.
  • Durability: Despite how quickly they’re made, same-day crowns do not trade quality for speed. Like regular crowns, they are still highly durable and can last for many years as long as they receive the right kind of maintenance.

What are the Cons of Same-Day Crowns?

When considering same-day crowns, it’s important to consider some of their potential disadvantages:

  • A Higher Cost: A same-day crown may cost more than a regular one due to the technology used to make it. That said, a higher price tag can potentially be balanced out by the convenience of getting a permanent crown right away.
  • Limited Options for Materials: When it comes to the material that your same-day crown will be made of, your options will typically be limited because of the method utilized to create the restoration.
  • Not Suitable for All Cases: Same-day crowns may not be the best choice for certain kinds of dental damage, such as tooth fractures that have occurred below the gums.

Should You Get a Same-Day Crown?

Even after learning more about the pros and cons of same-day crowns, you might not be completely sure whether one is the best choice for your smile. Luckily, your dentist can help; if you schedule a consultation with them, they can examine your tooth and consider the specifics of your situation in order to determine whether a same-day crown is right for you.
